Like so many around the world, we are also taking this time to venture near — to discover what beautiful destinations we have close to us, some that we had overlooked for the more exotic. Every week we’ll be sharing a new destination in Turkey, trying to unravel the mysteries — one road trip at a time.

Week 1: İznik, Formerly Known as Nicaea

Only an hour’s drive from Istanbul lies İznik, on the shores of its namesake lake. With a rich history dating back to 2300 BC, this little but mighty town was visited by prominent figures throughout history — including Alexander the Great — and hosted momentous events like the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, hosted by Roman Emperor Constantine, which had far-reaching consequences on Christianity.

Fun fact: The Nicene Creed established the uniform observance on the date of Easter!

What to See

MEP loved the church-turned-mosque Hagia Sophia, which still retains its Roman mosaics and amphitheatre. The İznik Museum at the former Ottoman Soup Kitchen dating back to the 14th century. The Lefke Gate and ancient city walls, in all their glory. An artisans’ street showcasing the best talent in the glorious art of Çini ceramics. And the lakeside — with its greenery, delicious freshwater seafood, and the newly exposed sunken Byzantine Palace.
