In full disclosure, I am biased. I lived in Türkiye for 10 years of my life—longer than any other country outside of the UK. I learned the language, immersed myself in the culture, toured, and explored while having some of the most thrilling and unforgettable moments of my life.

You might say I know a little more than the average holidaymaker or occasional event professional. But the truth is, you can never know enough about Türkiye. With its rich, colorful history, breathtaking beauty, and unique geolocation straddling the continents of Europe and Asia, the list for exploration is truly endless. From its incredible foodie culture and emerging winemaking scene to its majestic mountains and sweeping coastlines, Türkiye is a destination that constantly reinvents itself.

The Grand Dame of Destinations

For as long as I can remember, Türkiye has always been a top-tier destination—like a Grand Dame. It is a country that everyone wants to visit at least once in their lives, but it almost always results in multiple returns. After all, there is just so much to see and do.

Friends often contact me and ask: “You lived there, didn’t you? What should we do?” That is the million-dollar question. I always respond with my own questions: Where exactly are you going? How long for? What interests you, and what have you already seen?

Unlocking the "Real" Istanbul

I have a few golden rules as an ex-resident. Yes, absolutely go and see the famous historical landmarks—the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and the Spice Bazaar. However, dedicate a day or two maximum to these sites. Then, dive into the heart and soul of the real Istanbul. Think about what true Istanbulites do.

Take a leisurely stroll along the Bosphorus between Arnavutköy and Bebek. Watch the fishermen line the water's edge, buy roasted corn on the cob from a street vendor, and look in awe as a massive tanker sails through the strait, making its way to the Black Sea just yards away from you.

Find local, off-the-beaten-path restaurants to enjoy a long Sunday lunch. Start with exquisite mezzes, move on to fresh fish or perfectly grilled kebabs, and finish with regional dessert specialties like künefe. As evening approaches, head for sundowners in Ortaköy or visit one of the beautiful Bosphorus-side hotels like the Four Seasons, Çırağan Palace, or Soho House.

Istanbul has an electrifying nightlife. If you enjoy a vibrant bar or an open-air club in the summer, do your research—or better yet, speak to a cool local like Eda from MEP, who is always on the pulse of what’s hot at the moment. The city is full of amazing restaurants, but try to step away from the tourist traps. Ask locals or a well-connected concierge for their insider recommendations. The people here are incredibly warm and always happy to share their best-kept secrets.

Beyond the City: Sail, Soar, and Explore

My advice for exploring the city extends to the water: Take an Istanbul public ferry up the Bosphorus. It’s inexpensive and arguably the greatest way to see the city's magnificent skyline. Be adventurous, cross over to the Asian side, and perhaps venture out to places like Polonezköy (the historic Polish village). Pick great spots to eat, or just pass the time watching this endlessly busy city in motion. I absolutely love it.

As for the rest of the country, my advice remains the same: Go exploring. From golfing in Antalya to sailing the pristine waters around Kaş, Kalkan, and Göcek. From experiencing the vibrant energy of Bodrum to walking through the ancient, world-renowned ruins of Ephesus—there is simply so much to take in.

I took my family back to Kaş and Kalkan this year, and we loved every single minute. Now, the kids want to return every year! We made friends with local restaurant owners, rented a private gulet (traditional wooden yacht) for the day, went fishing with a local grandfather who knew everything about the Aegean Sea, befriended the local street dogs and cats, and, of course, ate spectacular food.

There are still items on my own bucket list, too. Next up: a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over the surreal, moon-like landscapes of Cappadocia, staying in luxury cave hotels carved directly into the rocks.

The Ultimate Canvas for Unforgettable Events

I will finish exactly how I started this blog: I am biased. I love Türkiye.

I truly believe that the more time you spend here, the deeper you fall in love with this magical country. But looking at it through a professional lens, it would be remiss of me not to highlight the immense potential it holds. If you are looking to deliver some of the most extraordinary corporate events and incentive experiences the world has to offer, the ultimate canvas is right here—on our European, and Asian, doorstep.
