These last few, challenging months have really brought something home to me. Events people need the support of each other, now more than ever.
To explain – right from when lockdown started, we took a decision at The Delegate Wranglers to try and make things happen for our members and beyond, to try & play our part in getting the industry back on its feet again. For us, this was not a time to think negatively and look inwardly at what we were losing, but to try and look beyond that and see what we could give back. Having recently reached the amazing milestone of 20,000 members, our aim was to positively affect as large a percentage of the group as possible.
Not only has given us a focus and a purpose so that we don’t dwell on the bigger picture too long or think about what MIGHT happens but also it’s allowed us to concentrate on what we can affect right here, right now.
For us, it’s all about helping with the small wins for people, from which those small wins can add up to a big difference. So if it’s upskilling people with our free DW Live shows, giving an event some publicity, advertising an industry job, or doing a feature on our members – we absolutely LOVE helping. Personally, this has given me a focus and purpose, knowing that we are helping people, in our own small way, to stay upbeat & positive through all of this.
That in turn drives more positivity, confidence & we turn the ship around a little bit more every day! Yes, this might be quite an idealistic view & people may scoff, but that doesn’t matter to me – that’s the way we are at DW and the way most of our members are too. If the industry is healing and move forward then we’ll all be doing that little bit better.
We have also been encouraging people to engage in what others are doing, even competitors – so that could be taking in a free podcast or webinar, reading a blog (thank you!!), or even commenting or just liking a post. Engagement breeds positivity. Positivity breeds confidence….and so on. Enough small incremental wins will eventually make a huge difference to the industry.
My take-home message from this post is to see if we can all make a positive difference to another event industry professional. Even people in your field – we all need to team-mates at the moment, fighting a much bigger battle. Together we are stronger.
