Discovering our doorsteps, one roadtrip at a time!
Like so many around the world, we are also taking this time to venture near – to discover what beautiful destinations we have close to us, some that we had overlooked for the more exotic. Every week we’ll be sharing a new destination in Turkey, trying to unravel the mysteries – one road trip at a time!
WEEK 1: İznik, formerly known as Nicaea
Only an hour drive from Istanbul is İznik, on the shores of its namesake lake. With a rich history dating back to 2300 B.C., this little but mighty town was visited by many prominent figures in history like Alexander the Great and hosted momentous events like First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in year 325, hosted by Roman Emperor Constantine – which had far-reaching consequences on Christianity.
Fun Fact: The Nicene Creed established the uniform observance on the date of Easter!
